November 14, 2002, Business Meeting Location: County of Los Angeles, Department of Public Works, Alhambra Room; 900 S. Fremont Ave., Alhambra, CA Roll Call of Officers:
Richard Lucas, Chapter President, called the November Business Meeting to order at approximately 12:00 p.m. Introductions: The meeting continued with self-introductions. Approximately 33 Los Angeles Basin Chapter Members & Associates attended. Committee Reports: Carol Jacobson, City of Manhattan Beach, Building Official, thanked Richard Lucas for his efforts on education and also thanked John Kelly for his hospitality in providing the Basin Chapter with the Alhambra Room in order to conduct the Monthly Business Meetings. In addition, she presented the new nominees for the upcoming Basin Chapter Board to the general membership. With a unanimous vote, the following individuals were appointed: Rick Becker - President Richard Lucas, President, introduced Henry Huang as the Chair of the Structural Committee who suggested introducing four new subcommittees. He indicated that a commitment of two hours per month for each subcommittee member will be required so as not to jeopardize the work of each jurisdiction. Richard Lucas indicated that Rick Becker, Vice-President,
has initiated a new way of making payments by credit cards through the website. Also, Richard
thanked Fady Mattar, Hassan Alameddine, Bob Gunther, and Ron Takiguchi for offering their
time and expertise in holding the educational seminars during the months of October and
November on the Program: Les Moran, in his current position as Corporate Vice President for the International Conference of Building Officials® (ICBO) directs the administrative and support functions for education, certification, sales and marketing, public relations, information technology, membership, product development, publishing, and customer service. Also, as a Senior Vice President of strategic development for the International Code Council®, Mr. Moran will oversee product research and development, publishing, information technology, marketing, public relations, and corporate communications. Mr. Moran gave an overview on the latest developments with respect to
ICC consolidation. In addition, he shed some light on the work taking place in the
State of California to reach State Officials and explain to them why the ICC Codes are
superior to any other Codes in circulation. He indicated that the ICC Council believes
that the State will adopt the ICC Codes. In addition, At the end of his presentation, Mr. Moran answered some questions related to the relationship with NFPA and the outlook of the upcoming codes in California. John Kelly, County of Los Angeles Superintendent of Building, encouraged each jurisdiction to respond to the NFPA letter with a cc to the California Standards Building Commission and the governor. Mr. Moran showed a video highlighting the role of Building Officials in serving their communities and the importance of the Building Codes to ensure efficient and safe construction. Approval of minutes: It was moved and seconded to approve the October 10, 2002, minutes. Communications: None.
