July 8, 1999 Location: Los Angeles County Public Works, Alhambra Room, 900 South Fremont Avenue, Alhambra Call to Order: John Kelly, President, called the July Business Meeting to order at approximately 12:25 p.m. Roll Call of Officers: President John
Kelly, Present Host: Richard Holguin, City of Los Angeles, announced that the City is having a fabulous year. They are proud of the reduction of amendments to the recently adopted Building Codes and are looking forward to the future and development of the City of Los Angeles. Introductions: The meeting began with self-introductions. Thirty-three (33) Los Angeles Basin Chapter Members & Associates attended. | General Commentary: John Kelly, President, announced that thanks to the help from Mac Daigleish the Christmas Banquet will be held at the Long Beach Aquarium in the Great Hall of the Pacific. The date will be December 12, 1999 and the cost will be $ 20 per person. Children are welcome. John Cheng, City of Burbank, announced that the Chapters current reserves are $ 8,796. Rick Becker, City of Burbank, announced that the Los Angeles Basin Chapter has entered the ICBO Annual Awards contest in the Public Information category. The awards will be announced in September at the ICBO/ BOCA/ SBCCI ABM in St. Louis. Rick has loaded the new software for our web page and has also added a Disaster Preparedness section to the web page. If anyone would like to add anything to our web page, contact Rick Becker. John Kelly announced that the new Liquefaction State Law exempts' one and two story single family dwellings located in a liquefaction zone from the requirement of a detailed liquefaction analysis. After the state allowed design reductions for dwellings, the anticipated differential settlement would be two inches. Designing the structure with a post tension slab could be an acceptable solution. Richard Lucas, City of Vernon, stated that Mel Green asked him to announce that the code change hearings for the 2000 UCBC will be held in Costa Mesa on July 20, 1999. The proposed changes and additional information can be found on the ICBO web page. John Cheng, City of Burbank, announced that the Ralph Grippo Scholarship has been chosen by Sally Grippo to be the First Chance Foundation. John will be working with Jim Isomoto with the City of Torrance to create the scholarship. Henry Huang, County of Los Angeles, announced that the American Institute of Steel Construction has published a supplement to the Seismic Provisions for Steel Buildings (1997). The supplement was one of this month's handouts and can be obtained from AISC at, One East Wacker Dr., Suite 3100, Chicago, IL 60601-2001. Henry also mentioned that there will be a seismic design seminar offered by SEAOSC and cosponsored by Los Angeles County Public Work Dept. August 7, 1999 from 7:30 a.m - 1:30 p.m. The location will be at the L. A. Co. Public Works Building, 900 Fremont Ave, Alhambra. Contact SEAOSC at (562) 908-6131. Program: An interesting, informative, and in-depth presentation on Earthquakes in Southern California was presented by Dr. Tom Henyey, professor of Geophysics and Director of the Southern California Earthquake Center at the University of Southern California and Jill Andrews, Director of Education and Knowledge Transfer USC / SCEC. The topics of discussion included discovering faults, mapping, monitoring, and predicting earth quakes.
